We had a great morning chatting all about bath time at our Every Little Step: Baby Basics Bathing Event sponsored by Walmart Canada!
Did you give baby their first bath?
Most of our mamas answered no. It was the staff at the hospital that gave babies their first bath while parents looked on. Some mamas were given the option and asked if they would like to give baby their first bath, but most said they didn't realize it was an option. This is something that as first time parents some wished they advocated more for, and asked the hospital staff if they could bathe baby while staff looked on and guided them through the steps.
How often do you bathe baby?
The answers here were all over the board. Most mamas bathe baby daily as part of their bedtime routine. Almost all of these mamas said they do not use soap on a daily basis. Other moms responded that baby gets a bath every second day and some even once a week or as needed. There is certainly no right answer to this question, and certainly depends on many factors!
Does your baby like bath time?
There was an overwhelming YES with this question. The moms all said that bath time was certainly a fun time for their babies. We only had one mama in the group that said baby didn't always like bath time, but enrolling in swimming lessons has certainly helped! Moms also stated that products like Johnson & Johnson's Bedtime Bath lotion is calming and smells fantastic! (AKA the purple lotion).
We also determined that most babies who attended our Baby Basics session LOVE bathtime with Dad which brought up the topic of bath time as being a great time for baby to bond with someone other than mom! (and give mom a much needed break).
What soaps do you use on baby?
Most of the mamas love Johnson & Johnson products in the bath! One baby in the crowd has extremely sensitive skin, so finding a product that worked proved extra difficult for mom. They have found an all natural organic product purchased from a local London business that works wonders.
Do you use a baby bath tub?
Almost all of our mamas use a baby bath tub that sits in the big tub. A few moms bathe their small babies in the sink. The mamas said that it can be tough to reach down into the tub to hold baby, so having knee pads or something to lean on makes for a much nicer experience for the adult supervising the bath. Mamas also got back on the topic that they welcome others doing bath time, especially dad.
What is the best temperature for the bath?
The moms agreed that if the bath water was comfortable for them, it would be ok for their baby. A couple of moms suprisingly said that their babies prefer colder baths! Everyone received a Garanimals Bath tub thermometers from Ginsey in their swag bags on July 17th, so testing the water to see if it's too hot will be as simple as 1,2,3!
